The last in a series of 5 mini-clinics enjoyed over our morning coffee, today's topics include: Bike Handling Skills such as Starting/Stopping, Shifting and Scanning along with Hazard Avoidance Maneuvers. Choose just the sessions that interest you or attend the entire series to complete the classroom portion of the Traffic Skills 101 course. Each mini-clinic is $5 for ACA members / $10 non-members. Scout out the City of Austin Bike Routes - a special hill climbing edition. We'll see some of Austin's best training hills near downtown and improve your technique at the same time. Expect to climb so treat your bike to a tune-up before ride day if it's not shifting smoothly. Today's 8:30 am mini-clinic covers Handling Skills including Shifting. $5 ACA members / $10 non-members. 03-13-2010:  Mellow Mountain Ride
Alright righteous riders of the dirt. The new and improved Mellow Mountain Ride starts this month. There will be a different pace and skill level each weekend. This weekend is for Intermediate riders. The pace is faster than the Beginners and no stops with a slightly different route. This is a 1.5 hour, 10-11 mile ride meeting at Walnut Creek Park. This ride is for intermediate/seasoned riders. The park is a single track dirt trail, twisting through the trees with a couple of creek crossings and short lime stone climbs. It is perfect for the beginner as well as the seasoned rider. Bring your mountain bike, helmet, nutritional needs to fuel up, supplies to fix a flat, and plenty of water. 9:00am rollout. * Event: SXSW 2010 * When: March 13, 2010, 2pm-6pm * Where: Austin, Texas * Who: SXSW Attendees, Austin Locals, cyclists * RSVP now at Upcoming or Facebook Bike Hugger's Mobile Social is a Texas-sized bike culture event. We'll ride around Austin arriving at Mellow Johnnys for a BBQ and Variety Show. Directions: Meet at Brush Square Park, across the street from the Convention Center. If you’re not riding, that’s ok, just show up at Mellow Johnnys around 4 PM when all the MoSo magic goes down. There are lots of places to rent bikes in Austin, check the maps at RidetheCity.com/austin for bike shops. For it’s 4th year of the MoSo, we’re doing a Variety Show at Mellow Johnnys. Like an epic Battle of the Bands, we’ll have local bike teams perform a skit, juggling act, breakdancing showdown, broadway number, maybe even a burlesque show for the Mobile Social crowd’s enjoyment. Some things to keep in mind before meeting us for this ride: You need a road bike in good working condition; a helmet; cycling clothing; plenty of water; and are able to ride comfortably for 2 hours without stopping. Scout out the City of Austin Bike Routes. Today's ride is a more challenging route than usual with the hills of Rollingwood and an option to ride a short section of Loop 360 with it's wide shoulders but faster traffic. The mileage is low at 14 miles but requires some experience. These rides are meant for exploring so bring your questions and leave your heart rate monitor at home. 03-20-2010:  Pablove Ride for Life
Join us Saturday, March 20th for a special event in conjunction with Dangerbird Records to benefit THE PABLOVE FOUNDATION, a charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with cancer (www.pablove.org). We will start the day off with a 30 or 60-mile bike ride around Austin with Pablove and Dangerbird founder Jeff Castelaz. Enjoy a terrific, invigorating excursion around town to raise awareness about childhood cancer and make a friend - or eight. Registration is $50 and all proceeds go DIRECTLY to the Pablove Foundation. This weekend is going to be a field trip. Meet at MJ's at 9am. We will drive to a new trail that has yet to be determined. Plan on a half day trip. We will plan on carpooling but be ready to drive your own vehicle to the trail. 04-17-2010:  Scout-A-Route Ride Southern Culture Off the Grid
Scout out the City of Austin Bike Routes. Head south of downtown via Bouldin, roll through the Emerald Forest and return via Forest Wood and Robert E Lee. Today's Bike Routes: 31, 82, 84, 25, 11, 64, and 33. These are 2 ways to get from Dittmar north across Lady Bird Lake. These rides are meant for exploring so bring your questions and leave your heart rate monitor at home. We roll faster but expect about 12mph ave pace since we are in town. 04-24-2010:  UT Landmarks Public Art Bike Tour
Join us as we celebrate Art Week Austin on two wheels. Today's ride is a campus tour visiting works in the UT Landmarks public art program. We ride from the bike shop but have a second departure at 9:00am from outside the Blanton Museum Cafe on the UT campus near MLK and Congress. (The Cafe is located in the west building.) We'll be joined by docents to fill us in on the artists and the pieces themselves. The total distance is 6 miles and will travel at a novice-friendly pace. Come by at 8:00am for pre-ride coffee.
